AMERICANS CAN TRAVEL TO CUBA IN 2020
LEGAL TRAVEL TO CUBA FROM THE UNITED STATES
It is legal in 2020 for Americans to travel to Cuba. On June 5th, 2019, new regulations limiting travel from the United States to Cuba were announced, however, Americans may still legally travel to Cuba in 2020. The regulations eliminated cruise ship travel and the frequently used “People-to-People” category of travel. However, “Support for the Cuban People” and “Religious” tours of Cuba are still legal in 2020, as are ten other categories of travel.
The difference between the former regulations and the changes enacted by the Trump administration in June 2019 is the prohibition on organized “people-to-people” travel to Cuba which fell under the educational category of the twelve authorized categories of travel to Cuba. These twelve categories remain the same and Americans and others subject to U.S. regulations may still visit the island in 2020 under the religious, sports, public performances and competitions, journalism, and family visits categories.
AMERICANS SUPPORT THE CUBAN PEOPLE
Isolating the island from American travelers is counterproductive and gives the Cuban government the ability to paint the U.S. as the bad guy and the root cause of Cuba’s economic woes. Money from U.S. travelers does reach the Cuban government, but only after Americans have exchanged ideas with Cubans and demonstrated to them that we are not the problem. The policy of isolating Cuba has not worked since 1961, and it probably will not start to work now.
